I want a camera to primarily take pictures of my children and family events. I want something that will take pictures without the blur as I can’t get my kids to sit still. I am willing to spend around 500 dollars. Which is the best choice(s) for me? Keep in mind I have only had experiences with point and shoot type cameras. Thanks.

You have 2 choices,a DSLR or a point and shoot. The DSLR will take bettor quality pictures. However it is big and bulky. You can’t just slip it into your pocket. Most DSLR camera’s have an easy mode so don’t worry about it’s complexity.
The point and shoot is smaller more descreet and most can shoot video. Many have very good picture quality but not so in poor light so you must use a flash. Those city night scenes are done with DSLR type camera’s
You decide if you want a point and shoot camera or a DSLR then people will be able to give you bettor opinions. Or go to your library and see what consumer reports has to say. At your budget you will have many choices.
oh my god i was in this situation a year ago… i researched for months different cameras. I would take pictures of my kids and they wouldn’t be there in the picture (they had already moved on). I got the nikon d40 and i absolutely love it, i took pictures of my son diving off the diving board and it looked like a slid show~didn’t miss a beat. i bought an extra flash but haven’t had to use it because the flash on the camera is wonderful!! I have taken pictures in pitch black that come out beautiful.. The camera alone at best buy a year ago was about 500
Sure hope this helps
i had no experience with cameras either, its a point and shoot camera
Crystal is right about the Nikon D40. It would be a great camera for your needs. It should be around $470 now and comes with a 18-55mm lens.
You can use it on the Auto settings till you are really familiar with it and then gradually learn to use the manual controls. It does not have live view like the point & shoots, but that is because it is a heavier camera and you need the viewfinder to compose the pictures. Holding it up to your eye and supporting it wirh your hands will give you steadier pictures.
It is NOT a point and shoot camera. It is a digital SLR. Go to a good camera store and look at this one. Hold it in your hands and see how easy it is for you to use the controls. Ask questions, and then have fun taking pics of your family! Good luck!
Yeah, this is a really open-ended question!
There is nothing wrong with point-and-shoot cameras, and as time goes on, some fairly high-end cameras are becoming point-and-shoot, mostly as a feature than a limitation to it’s abilities. I bought an awesome Sony SLR which has a point-and-shoot setting, and it’s super fast, but it also has manual override for all the custom settings I want. Try http://sharedreviews.com if you need help with this - there are a TON of people there (lots of moms) who talk about their experiences with their cameras and how they performed, and it’s always helpful to hear from people like yourself with some real world experiences before spending your money. Good luck!!
